History and architecture

Originally, the square was made up of two squares connected by a bridge. The Sun Fountain, on the semi-circular section near the sea, was inaugurated in 1956. It features a 7-metre-tall representation of Apollo and 5 bronze statues representing figures from Greco-Roman mythology: Earth, Mars, Venus, Mercury and Saturn.

On the other side of the square, 7 statues perched 12 metres high overlook the area. This is a work by artist Jaume Plensa called "Conversation in Nice". These 7 figures symbolise the seven continents. At night, the statues light up and shift from one colour to another: these light variations represent their exchanges with one another. They are often mistaken for Buddhas, though the artist intended to depict them in the style of ancient scribes.
